Eater Atlanta | Hero Doughnuts Opens for Chocolate Cream Doughnuts and Breakfast Sandwiches in Summerhill
Hero Doughnuts, owned by Wil Drake and Paul Yeck, is now open on Georgia Avenue in Summerhill. The Homewood, Alabama-based doughnut and burger shop shares a large patio space with newly opened Hot Dog Pete’s next door, co-owned by Alabama native Nick Pihakis of Jim N’ Nick’s Bar-B-Q. Both counter-service restaurants include some seating indoors.
The menu at Hero features over a dozen doughnut flavors, including a variety of cream-filled and cake doughnuts with toppings such as Fruity Pebbles or vanilla, chocolate, or pistachio glaze. Jam-filled doughnuts tend to change with the seasons. Hero also sells doughnut holes dipped in vanilla glaze, apple fritters, and cinnamon rolls.
Most doughnuts are made using a brioche dough, which is also used to create the buns for Hero’s bacon, egg, and cheese breakfast sandwich, kolaches, hamburgers, fried bologna sandwich, and Buffalo chicken “super crunch” sandwich.
Drake and Yeck are in the process of acquiring a liquor license for Hero to eventually serve cocktails like bloody marys and mimosas, spiked nitro iced coffees, beer, and wine. A remote meeting is scheduled to be held on July 30 to consider a number of Atlanta restaurant-related alcohol license applications awaiting approval. The license review board’s last meeting was held at the end of February, prior to Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms closing City Hall and other city departments due to the ongoing health crisis. Most city offices continue to remain closed.
Open daily from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
