Atlanta Celebrates Opening Of Truist Andrew and Walter Young Family At-Promise Center

Atlanta city officials celebrated the opening of a third At-Promise Center during a ceremony on Thursday. It’s where youth who have fallen off the tracks can get a new lease on life, and it honors two legendary community activists.

Officials cut the ribbon on the third location, naming it the Truist Andrew and Walter Young Family At-Promise Center. The 5,000 square feet state-of-the-art learning center will give more youth a second chance. The Atlanta Police Foundation partnered with the Metro Atlanta YMCA and Truist Foundation to build the facility, which honors the namesakes who have served the community.

“The At-Promise Center is going to be one of the important bridges that help people get over,” said former Atlanta Mayor and UN Ambassador Andrew Young.

“I’m so happy to be able to serve, and I hope that I can live up to the honor of having my name mentioned here,” said his brother, Dr. Walter Young.

The center is part of a youth crime initiative, building relationships between police and the community. “When you walk in this building, you see this family here interacting with children who otherwise may not have mentors in their lives,” said Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, referring to the Young family.

“It’s really all about that inspiration every day of being inspired by seeing great things happen, great leaders leading,” said Atlanta Police Foundation President and CEO Dave Wilkinson.

Chloe Brown shared her experience as a member of the My Journey Matters Program at the At-Promise Center.

“I was arrested for armed robbery and later released and placed on probation,” she said. The center gave her a brand new start. “I have passed three of my GED tests, and I’m currently working to get my GED, and I just want to thank the At-Promise Center for all that you do.”

Atlanta Police Chief Rodney Bryant echoed the mayor’s sentiments regarding the center.

“We know that when you have promise, you have hope, and that hope is for the generations of these young men and women that don’t have hope right now,” said Bryant said.
