Valdosta State Student Housing
Valdosta State University is situated in south Georgia near coastal resorts on a Spanish Mission-style campus recognized for its beauty. After an enrollment boom increased enrollment from 7,000 to 12,000 students, VSU needed to update and augment its student housing to keep up with surging demand. The VSU Foundation contracted with Carter to help develop a plan for the construction and renovation of multiple campus facilities including: housing, mixed-use parking, health center, and student center to support demand generated by existing and potential students. The complex, multi-phased plan allowed the new construction and renovation to occur simultaneously so that critical issues such as overall bed count of the university never dropped. The university also committed to using minimal additional property.
The student housing consisted of three new facilities and three renovations. New facilities included both suite and apartment style units with additional student amenities including student gathering areas, dining, recreation, and laundry areas. Campus-wide facilities such as a mailroom, student affairs office, and academic classrooms were also incorporated. Many of the new facilities increased density on existing footprints to maximize land use on campus. Other new facilities delivered as part of the overall plan included: a 27,00 sf student health center, a 120,000 sf student union, and two mixed-use parking structures accommodating 2100 cars and 38,000 sf of auxiliary services office space. All projects were completed on-time and with savings returned to the owner.
