Spelman College Read Hall Wellness Center
In the fall of 2012, Spelman College, a historic liberal-arts college for black women in Atlanta, ranked among the top 75 Best Liberal Arts Colleges, launched its decision to discontinue intercollegiate sports and fund a new state-of-the-art recreation center and wellness program to benefit all 2,100 students on campus. Dr. Beverly Daniel Tatum, former president of Spelman College, was instrumental in leading the Wellness Revolution on campus.
Spelman selected Carter as the project manager, continuing a successful relationship from the renovation of its historic Laura Spelman Rockefeller Hall. Spelman envisioned Read Hall being a part of its commitment to educating the whole person -- mind, body and spirit. The new facility fosters development of life-long fitness skills for students, faculty, and staff. The project includes approximately 53,000 square feet of space on two levels. The program includes a new performance gymnasium, four-lane swimming pool, wellness classroom and teaching kitchen, multi-purpose rooms for dance, yoga, zumba, and other fitness activities, an indoor track, locker space, and administrative offices. Read Hall is located on the historic campus Oval and is LEED™ Gold Certified.
Carter assisted the College in the selection of the design and construction team, as well as other consultants, and managed the project delivery process. The new wellness facility opened in 2015.
