Agnes Scott College McCain Library

Decatur, GA

Agnes Scott College, an over-100-year-old private liberal arts women’s college, was experiencing significant student population growth. To accommodate this growth, the college faced the challenge of having to renovate and expand the original McCain Library building to meet the demand for additional stack space, study rooms and resource areas. The project was an integral part of the college’s $135 million capital improvements program, responding to increasing enrollment and the demand for technologically modern facilities.

Carter was entrusted by Agnes Scott College to oversee the complete restoration and expansion program for the historic McCain Library building. Carter, in concert with Agnes Scott College, selected the design and construction team, and developed project budgets and schedules. Carter advised the college to establish a temporary library facility, so that the students would have uninterrupted access to the library resources during construction. This saved construction costs and accelerated the construction schedule.

At project completion, the original 30,000-square-foot library was restored to its original grandeur. The 45,000-square-foot addition was sensitively located behind the historic structure, preserving the quadrangle side facade and incorporating historically accurate materials such as brick and limestone.

The McCain Library completed ahead of schedule, opening more than two months early. Significant savings were realized due to the accelerated construction schedule. After all change orders were incorporated into the original project budget, the project saved $650,000.
