Atlanta Business Chronicle | How Georgia State athletics is steering the redevelopment of Summerhill

Georgia State University's downtown campus is anchored by Center Parc Stadium, formerly known as Turner Field.

While sports have been a part of the fabric of Summerhill since the Braves moved to Atlanta in 1966, they haven't given the neighborhood its first true win until Georgia State University, the downtown Atlanta school that once competed in the obscure Trans American Atlantic Conference, decided it wanted to build itself into a Division I powerhouse.

Now the Summerhill neighborhood is seeing its largest wave of revitalization in its 155-year history, and more projects are on the way.

The university has big plans for its athletic neighborhood, which started almost four years ago with the acquisition of the former Braves' stadium. The 83-acre site, which includes adjacent properties and parking lots, anchors GSU's downtown campus and will be faced opposite to the soon-to-built convocation center, just north of the stadium. The center will house a growing men's basketball program.

GSU partnered with Carter to turn its athletic dreams into a reality. This is coming to fruition by not just creating a larger presence in the city with new and renovated facilities but also by accompanying them with surrounding academic, housing and retail spaces.
